D-PLACE Societies
1,291 ethnographically documented societies from D-PLACE
D-PLACE (Database of Places, Language, Culture, and Environment) provides coded observations for 94 anthropological variables across subsistence strategies, settlement patterns, kinship systems, and social organization. Focal years are typically 1850–1940, representing the "ethnographic present." Of these societies, 87% have been spatially joined to EDOP's environmental signatures, enabling exploration of environment-culture relationships. 158 (13%) lack basin assignments (islands, coastal locations). Initial marker colors differentiate OneEarth Bioregions.
Dominant Subsistence (EA042) and High Gods (EA034) below are two exemplar traits from the Ethnographic Atlas dataset, chosen for their differing potential association with environmental settings.
Every subsistence-coded society is plotted by aridity index (log scale, Arid to Wet) against mean annual temperature (Cool to Warm) — the two axes an earlier PCoA comparison (WO8a) found best separated subsistence modes: cold foragers cluster upper-left, warm-dry pastoralists lower-left, agriculture holds the wet-mild quadrant. Societies coded with the selected value are highlighted against the full subsistence-coded set shown in gray.
Because those regions were predicted in advance rather than found by looking, a highlighted group landing where its subsistence mode was expected to land is a real (if modest) confirmation, not a pattern search after the fact — unlike High gods' Environment scan, which has no such prior prediction to check against.
The composition donut resolves each society's language family via Glottolog and is hover-linked to the scatter and the map: hovering a family highlights only that family's societies everywhere at once. Families below 20 societies in the current selection are marked "small n" in the donut legend; "Unresolved" covers societies Glottolog could not match to a family.
What this does not show. A highlighted cluster landing in its predicted region is consistent with the environmental hook, but consistency isn't proof — shared ancestry or geographic contact among related societies could produce the same visual clustering even where the prediction happens to hold. The hover-by-family probe is a visual check, not the family-restricted permutation control used elsewhere in EDOPS's statistical work.
For the selected trait value, this counts how many societies fall in each OneEarth ecoregion and groups those ecoregions by biogeographic realm. Realms are ordered by total society count (most first); each realm lists its top three ecoregions with their counts. The map above marks every society holding the selected value in red, with other D-PLACE societies in gray, so realm concentration and geographic concentration can be read together.
What this does not show. These are raw counts, not shares of each realm's or ecoregion's total society population — a realm with more D-PLACE societies overall will tend to top this list for almost any trait value, simply because there are more societies to draw from, not necessarily because the trait is unusually concentrated there. Only the top three ecoregions per realm are shown, so a realm's true breadth can run wider than what's listed here. This is a descriptive count, not a test of association between environment and trait.
Each strip shows every society coded with the selected trait value, one tick per society, positioned by that society's own percentile on a single variable's range across all basin-joined D-PLACE societies (aridity, temperature, seasonality, ruggedness, landform position). A cluster of ticks toward one end suggests those societies tend to share that end of the variable; ticks spread evenly across the strip suggest no relationship to that particular measure.

What this does not show. This is a descriptive, exploratory view, not a statistical test — High gods (EA034) has no named theoretical hook to confirm here, unlike Dominant subsistence's Climate envelope, so a visible cluster is a pattern worth a closer look, not evidence of an environmental effect. The five variables are not independent of each other (aridity and temperature correlate globally, for instance), so a cluster on one strip often reappears on a related one without adding new information. The hover-by-family probe is a visual check, not the family-restricted permutation control used elsewhere in EDOPS's statistical work — it can suggest a pattern is really just one family's geography, but it can't rule diffusion in or out with any rigor.

Each society is ranked three separate ways against the other societies holding this same trait value. Ancestral — how rare the trait is within the society's own language family; 1/28 means one of 28 corpus members holds it. Geographic — distance to the nearest society of an unrelated family with the same trait. Environmental — distance in five-dimensional environmental space to the nearest society with the same trait. Overall sorts by each society's worst rank across the three, so a society high on all three rises to the top.
The rankings are not combined into a score, and there is no threshold: nothing here is flagged as an isolate or not. The order is the whole output, and where the three measures disagree is often more informative than where they agree.
What a high rank does not establish. All three measures are defined relative to other holders of the trait. For a practice that spread from a place of origin, the outer edge of that spread will be far from the bulk of holders, unrelated to them, and in a different environment — the same signature as an independent occurrence. This view cannot distinguish the frontier of cultural diffusion from convergent invention, and for transmissible traits the former is the more likely reading. The Ethnographic Atlas variables used here carry no coding for religious contact or missionization, so that check is not available.
Other limits. Some societies rank as remote because their region is thinly sampled in D-PLACE rather than because they are truly isolated. Environmental distance measures atypicality within this trait group, not against the world's environments — a society can top this ranking while sitting somewhere globally ordinary. Societies without a basin assignment are excluded from the environmental ranking; because those are mostly islands and coasts, some of the strongest candidates for genuine environmental atypicality are missing from it. Nothing here is a significance test.
